I first came across this book at the Catherwood museum in Merida, Mexico. I was introduced to the Maya through reading the Stevens books years ago and was pleased to see this book in the museum. But it was a little too pricey for me so I waited patiently and picked it up on amazon for a much better price. It's a great book. The pictures alone are wonderful. It's nice to learn a little about the man too. I had no idea there is so little information about Catherwood's life available. I've always enjoyed his artwork in the Stevens books and have a couple of his prints framed in my house. It's nice to become a little more familiar with this man through this great book. It's a coffee table size book so the artwork is large. Awesome!

The Lost Cities of the Mayas follows the life of Frederick Catherwood, the artist whose fabulous paintings of Maya cities and sculptures ignited interest in the Maya in Europe and the U.S. In addition to the interesting story, the reader gets to see many of the famous drawings and prints, all carefully reprinted in large format. Some of his drawings were so accurate that modern scholars can use them to read glyphs that have now become unreadable from exposure to the elements.This is a good book for someone just learning about the Maya or for the seriously addicted Mayanist.

Excellent book.Better than photographs of the same subjects. Catherwood rates as a first class artist.This is as close as ever that I will get to visit the ruins.Stupendous.

I'm so happy to find this volume available through Amazon. It just fits in with my studies in the Maya area, and reinforces my feeling that Frederick Catherwood is underappreciated.
